The modern news media environment is one of simultaneous information overload and information vacuum.
With so many outlets, so little differentiation between fact and opinion and so little explanation of issues with context and historical background, it's no wonder people are tuning out most of the noise and just picking and choosing media outlets they consider to share their ideological views.

But explanatory journalism seeks to change that. To delve into the background of an issue an explain its evolution to today's political, social, cultural landscape.
